SUPERCROSS CLIMAX SET FOR AUCKLAND

JANUARY 20, 2010: Another high-octane explosion is set for Manukau City this Saturday night as the New Zealand Supercross Championships reach a climax.

When national supercross championship leader Ben Townley (Kawasaki) crashed at the third round of four in this season’s New Zealand Supercross Championships in Tokoroa on Saturday night, many in the large crowd feared the worst.

Was this the end to the Kiwi international's comeback bid? Was this the end to Townley's first New Zealand championship campaign in nearly 10 years?

But the Tauranga man then won the next two races and looked comfortable doing it.

The 25-year-old Townley therefore remains on target to take his first national title in more than 10 years and he will hopefully wrap it all up on the land beside the TelstraClear Events Centre in Manukau City this Saturday night.

With his 9-1-1 results in Tokoroa on Saturday, Townley extended his lead in the championship chase to 26 points over his nearest threat, Christchurch Honda rider Justin McDonald. Mount Maunganui pair Mason Phillips (Kawasaki) and Cody Cooper (Suzuki) are third equal, just one point further back.

Winner on the night in Tokoroa was fellow Bay of Plenty rider Cooper.

With 1-3-2 results, the seasoned international leapt from fourth to third equal in the championship standings and he fully intends to move up one or two more places this Saturday night.

"I struggled a bit tonight because my sore knee has no strength in it," said Cooper. "It's all swelled up. I'll just have to see what I can manage at the final round in Auckland."

The Senior Lites (250cc) class in Tokoroa belonged to defending champion Scott Columb (Suzuki), the Queenstown man finishing 2-1-1 on the night to edge out dual-class campaigner Phillips – who took his Kawasaki to 1-2-2 finishes.

Rangiora’s Isaiah McGoldrick (KTM) won the junior 250cc class at Tokoroa and created a 16-point buffer over nearest challenger Tom Managh (Suzuki), of Wanganui.

Managh crashed at Tokoroa and is now sidelined for up to three months, leaving the way clear for third-ranked rider, Auckland's Brandon Tipene (KTM), to move up on Saturday.

McGoldrick's younger brother Micah topped the podium in the Junior Lites (85cc) class at Tokoroa and he now enjoys a 21-point advantage over Feilding’s Haki Waller (Kawasaki).

JANUARY 13, 2010: The only thing certain about supercross racing is that nothing is certain.

Tauranga's Ben Townley leads the open class and Queenstown's Scott Columb is top of the Lites (250cc) class at the halfway stage of the four-round New Zealand Supercross Championships but there are still two rounds to go and anything can still happen.

Round three is set for this Saturday night at the Amisfield track in Tokoroa and both Townley (Kawasaki) and Columb (Suzuki) know they can take nothing for granted.

Townley is a comfortable 20 points clear of Christchurch Honda rider Justin McDonald and 29 ahead of third-placed Mason Phillips (Kawasaki), of Mount Maunganui, but one slip-up now and Townley's advantage could quickly evaporate.

Columb is the defending senior 250cc champion but he has not had it all his own way this season and it was dual-class campaigner Phillips who led the class after the series opener in Timaru a week ago.

Columb made up for the slow start to his 2010 campaign by dominating the evening at Sunday's round two at Motueka, emerging at the end of the event with a narrow six-point lead.

Columb had been nine points behind Phillips at the start of racing in Motueka, but the South Islander quickly made up the lost ground thanks to 1-2-1 results on Sunday.

Taupo Suzuki rider Brad Groombridge is third in the rankings, just 15 points behind Phillips.

"I haven't been overly impressed with my riding lately, to be totally honest," said Columb.

"I crashed during qualifying at round one and had blurred vision for the rest of the meeting. I came to Motueka feeling a little better and, of course, I'm happy to come away from Motueka with the series lead.

"I'm not many points in front but I've turned it around," said Columb.

"Timaru didn't really go to plan and I struggled there."

Rangiora brothers Isaiah and Micah McGoldrick (both on KTM bikes) leads the two junior categories, the Junior 250cc class and the Junior Lites (85cc) class respectively.

The fourth and final round scheduled for Manukau City the following weekend, on January 23.

JANUARY 11, 2010: Bay of Plenty rider Ben Townley was simply unstoppable at round two of the New Zealand Supercross Championships at Motueka on Sunday.

The Kawasaki ace has been on the comeback from injury but showed he was easily on the path back to full fitness as he won all three open class races at the popular Rat Track facility.

Each time he edged out an injured Cody Cooper (Suzuki), of Mount Maunganui, and New Zealand MX1 motocross champion Justin McDonald (Honda), of Christchurch, in the race for the podium top step.

Meanwhile, in the seniors Lites (250cc) class, it was time for defending champion Scott Columb (Suzuki) to come good.

Columb had a difficult opening round in Timaru a week earlier but he was in superb form at Motueka on Sunday, finishing 1-2-1 in his three races to overtake early series leader Mason Phillips (Kawasaki), of Mount Maunganui, and rocket to the top of the standings.

Tight action in the junior grades saw Wanganui's Tom Managh (Suzuki) close up on Rangiora's Isaiah McGoldrick (KTM) at the top of the 250cc class.

Managh dominated on Sunday as he scored 1-2-1 finishes, moving up from second overall and 11 points behind McGoldrick to equal first in the standings.

Second best in this class on Sunday was Auckland's Brandon Tipene (KTM), although he remains third in the series standings.

In the junior Lites (85cc) class, Rangiora's Micah McGoldrick (KTM), younger brother of Isaiah, stretched his points lead with 1-3-1 results, while Pahiatua's Scott Sowry (Kawasaki) impressed with three runner-up finishes.

Feilding's Haki Waller (Kawasaki) was third best in the class at Motueka and he remains No.2 in the class rankings.

Motorcycling New Zealand supercross co-commissioner Neil Ritchie said he was thrilled with the racing so far.

"Everywhere we can see the level of racing improving all the time. Tailenders in the lites classes are not getting lapped and it's the best supercross racing we've seen in New Zealand.

"It's the best depth of talent we've seen, real quality racing," said Ritchie.

More sizzling action is expected at round three in Tokoroa this Saturday night. The fourth and final round is set for Manukau City on Saturday, January 23.

Leading standings after round two of the New Zealand Supercross Championships at Motueka on Sunday:

Super-X >>> TOWNLEY KEEN TO BUILD ON LEAD

JANUARY 8, 2010: Ben Townley is up and running and he has no intention of stopping.

Bay of Plenty's Townley -- who won the 2004 motocross world championship before heading to the United States to win the East Coast Lites Supercross crown in America in 2007 -- had virtually been sidelined more than two years after suffering a serious shoulder injury in the US in late 2007.

But, since just before Christmas, he has been back in action and fast heading towards full fitness again after the enforced layoff.

It was a huge confidence boost for the 25-year-old Tauranga-based rider when he won the opening round of four in the New Zealand Supercross Championships near Timaru on Wednesday night.

But there's no time to catch his breath with the next round set for this Sunday night, just a few hours' drive up the road, at Motueka's popular Rat Track facility.

Townley (Kawasaki) battled national MX1 champion Justin McDonald (Honda) and Mount Maunganui's Mason Phillips (Kawasaki) before claiming the outright win with 1-3-1 results on Wednesday night.

Townley ended the evening with 55 points, five points more than Christchurch's McDonald, so there's really nothing to separate the two riders as Sunday's action at Motueka will surely prove.

Phillips is just three points behind McDonald.

"I qualified fastest and felt pretty good all night (at Timaru)," said Townley.

"I stalled the bike on lap one of race one but came back through the entire field to win that. It felt awesome. Race two I was battling with (Mount Maunganui's) Cody Cooper and we came together on the track and got tangled. We both went down. I think I did okay to salvage fourth place from that. Race three was pretty straightforward.

"I'm looking forward to the other rounds now and hopefully building on my points lead," he said.

Meanwhile, Phillips did double duty in Timaru and leads the senior lites (250cc) class, ahead of defending champion Scott Columb (Suzuki), of Queenstown.

Melbourne rider Dylan Long leads the junior 250cc class, ahead of Rangiora's Isaiah McGoldrick, while McGoldrick's younger brother Micah scored a hat-trick of wins to lead the junior lites class from Feilding's Haki Waller.

The riders will warm up for Sunday's racing by contesting the one-round South Island Supercross Championships, at the same Motueka venue, on Saturday evening.

Super-X > TOWNLEY DRAWS FIRST BLOOD

JANUARY 7, 2009: Bay of Plenty rider Ben Townley again showed his international class as he dominated round one of the New Zealand Supercross Championships near Timaru last night.

The Kawasaki ace has been on the comeback from a shoulder injury suffered in September 2007 and Wednesday's event was only his second major outing.

But again it was a winning one.

He finished 1-3-1 in his three open class races at the Backflips Supercross facility at Pleasant Point, ending the evening with 55 points, five points more than recently-crowned national MX1 motocross champion Justin McDonald, of Christchurch.

Honda's McDonald carded 4-1-2 results and showed he will be Townley's main threat for the title, with three rounds remaining, the next of which is at Motueka's Rat Track facility on Sunday. Round three is set for Tokoroa on January 16 with the fourth and final round planned for the TelstraClear Events Centre, Manukau, on January 23.

Third best in the open class was Mount Maunganui rider Mason Phillips, who did double duty on the night, also racing his way to the top of the senior lites (250cc) standings.

Phillips (Kawasaki) was unbeaten in his three 250cc outings, finishing the evening ahead of Suzuki pair Scott Columb (Queenstown) and Brad Groombridge (Taupo).

Timaru's Craig Smith impressed by winning the battle for 'superpole', the Honda rider coming out as top individual at the end of 16 two-rider shootout races.

Melbourne rider Dylan Long won the junior 250cc class, ahead of Rangiora's Isaiah McGoldrick, who rode impressively to finish the evening just three points further back, and Wanganui's Tom Managh was third overall.

The junior lites (85cc) class was won by Micah McGoldrick, Isaiah's younger brother, who scored a hat-trick of wins, with Feilding's Haki Waller runner-up and Christchurch's Dylan Walsh taking the podium's third step.

Motorcycling New Zealand supercross co-commissioner Neil Ritchie said it was an awesome night's racing.

"There was a 50% increase in rider numbers and twice as many spectators turned up than were anticipated by the host club," he said.

Ritchie said the racing was very close and all the top eight riders in each class stole a shot of the limelight.

More of the same is expected in Motueka on Sunday.
