It is now two months since the AGM. For those who attended the AGM weekend in Wellington (21-23 May), I trust you found the weekend, both educational and enjoyable. Personally I found it to be one of the best, if not the best, conference held in many years. The atmosphere was extremely positive, with everyone pulling together and the large number of clubs attending (75%) showed MNZ is moving in the right direction.
Highlights of the weekend would have to be the excellent seminars given by Judene Edgar on Financial Management and Sponsorship & Fundraising, Paul Searancke and David Yardley’s presentation on their progress with the likes of ACC and others, along with the different Sporting Workshops. The appointment of Robin Atkins as a Life Member at the AGM, which culminated in the announcement of MIKE PERO as MNZ’s Patron.
The momentum begun at the AGM has rolled on into the year, with the “Newly” formed Motocross and Road Race Commissions, setting about leading the way forward in our ‘Sport’. Both have recently announced their Championship dates for the 2010 – 2011 season.
Another area of growth is “Officials Training”. A trial presentation was delivered in Invercargill to 13 local club members and was extremely successful. The next seminar is scheduled for August 7th in Palmerston North, with others to follow around the country. The aim is to establish accredited Officials at all levels from Clerk of Course through to safety and flag marshals. This is a new departure for MNZ, which in the past only dealt with Stewards Training.
The Recreation/ Leisure Commissioner has also had some noteworthy successes, Paul has been appointed as a member on Motorcycle Safety Levy Establishment Committee, which will be looking at road safety and rider training. He has also been invited to accompany the ACC Minister (Nick Smith) on a fact finding mission to Australia.
The Board has also appointed several Standing Committees to assist in the running of our ‘Sport’. Coaching, Media, Rules, Officials Training and Sponsorship & Funding.
The Office is currently in full swing with the licence renewals and the newly developed systems are working extremely well, with the Office processing over 100 licences per day. Vicky and her TEAM must be congratulated for this sterling effort.
It is encouraging to see the optimism that is developing within our ‘Sport”.
For now GO FORWARD, GET ENVOLVED and ENJOY the RIDE.
Yours in Motorcycling
B J (Jim) Tuckerman President Motorcycling New Zealand Inc.

Long Time Tokoroa Motorcycle Shop Owner
At the recent Motorcycling New Zealand Inc Annual General Meeting in Wellington, Tokoroa’s Robin Atkins was awarded a Life Membership.
68 year-old Atkins has been active both as a racer and an organiser, as well as serving for many years as a MNZ steward in his region.
Atkins was a founder member and is now a Life Member of the South Waikato Motorcycle Club, who many would call the “Home” of Supercross in New Zealand.
During his racing career Atkins raced many different machines, winning the 1972 New Zealand Sidecar Championship, until his accident on a Yamaha TZ350 during the Marlboro Series at Timaru on New Years day 1977.
Robyn has two sons Greg (former NZ Senior Motocross Champion) who today works as Track Manager for Youthstream building tracks for the World Motocross Championships.
Second son Daryl (former NZ Junior and Senior Motocross and Supercross Champion) currently races Super Motards in the USA. He was last seen competing at the Cemetery Circuit (Wanganui) in 2008, where he still holds the outright Super Motard lap record.
“It was fantastic to receive the life membership the other weekend and I am looking forward to many more years involved in motorcycling,” said Atkins from his Tokoroa base,

FIM Management Council Meetings
The FIM Management Council convened in an extraordinary meeting on June 19 & 20 in Geneva. The main topics discussed and decisions taken are the following: the White Ribbon Motorcycle Ride
To the Editor, The White Ribbon campaign has grown to become a major event in New Zealand that encourages men to be part of the solution and provide the leadership required to end violence against women. As part of the campaign, the White Ribbon Motorcycle Ride is an opportunity for men to show their support and engage with communities throughout the North Island sharing their stories of hope and encouraging other men to lead non violent lives. We would like Motorcycle Sport to consider including articles to support this call to end violence and inform riders about the event. Many of the participants in 2009 had seen or experienced the effects of family violence as either children or former perpetrators, and all want to make a positive impact for both women and children. The White Ribbon Motorcycle Ride takes place from the 19th to 28th of November leaving from Tauranga and arriving at Wellington via State Highway One. From there, the ride departs from Parliament travelling up the east and west coasts to Auckland and through to Bream Bay. The Ride will be led by the Super Maori Fullas - three brothers who grew up the Super Maori Fulla way - surrounded by love and respect; and the Patriots Defence Force Motorcycle Club - former and serving members of the New Zealand Defence forces who want to put their peacekeeping skills to use on the home front.
In 2009 the White Ribbon Ride visited over 35 towns and cities throughout the North Island with more than 200 riders taking part. At each destination riders were met with events, rallies, sausage sizzles, local and national media, forums and hakas – all designed to promote the anti-violence message in their communities.
Based on the enthusiasm displayed last year and with a much longer organisational lead up, 2010 will be both bigger and better and the Families Commission would like you to be a part of this event. I hope you consider the opportunity riders have to make positive change in our community, and look forward to chatting with you to discuss your possible support. Further information about the White Ribbon Motorcycle Ride is available at www.whiteribbon.org.nz. Yours faithfully, ![]()

20 May, 2010 Catalina Island Grand Prix Returns in 2010The Avalon City Council Tuesday, May 4 unanimously approved a request by AMA District 37 Motorcycle Club to host a Catalina Island Grand Prix. The on road and off road event should be a great boost to tourism at a time when business is usually slow. From the Catalina Islander: Throughout the 1950s, the Catalina Grand Prix was one of the premier motorcycle races in the United States. Every year, boats loaded with motorcycles crossed the channel from the mainland. The races usually consisted of more than 206 bikers competing in a mad scramble over a 10-mile course that ran through city streets and up into the hills above Avalon, through the golf course and then back into the city streets. "This is going to be a family orientated event," he said. "There will be plenty of spectator access to races... we are bringing back a piece of Catalina's history and the nostalgia of the Island.” However, (Avalon Mayor) Kennedy said the event could have a short shelf life on Catalina. "This is a one time permit," he said. "The success or failure of this event is going to dictate whether anything like this happens again on Catalina." Details are still very limited, a website with complete information is expected to be up next month. Thanks for the great tip from Bryan!

MAY 4, 2010: JDR Motorsports KTM has issued a tribute to Andrew McFarlane, who tragically died while racing at the Australian motocross championships’ third round at the weekend. McFarlane, the teams Pro Open rider died after suffering head injuires during practice laps before the main race at round three of the 2010 MX Nationals at Reg Hunt Park, Broadford, 30 minutes north of Melbourne last Sunday, May 2. The tribute reads: Sunday 2nd May, 2010, became the darkest day in JDR Motorsports history with the death of sporting legend Andrew McFarlane at The Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals held at Broadford. Andrew McFarlane was not only a legend on the track but off. His commitment to the sport, to each member of the team, to his family and his wife Nat and daughter Tayla, Andrew was a true legend in every way. His death has shattered the JDR Motorex KTM racing team, who are left reeling with the horror of what has occurred, particularly to someone who has raced on the worlds best tracks, and was one of the genuinely good guys of the sport. After two weeks of solid preparation, Andrew being the ultimate professional was in peak condition both mentally and physically. Working alongside of his father Ron, who was his mentor and mechanic they had the KTM motorcycle exactly where they wanted the bike to be, and were very confident about the weekend at Broadford, as it was here that Andrew had started his International career ten years prior. The entire team of JDR Motorex KTM have been personally and professionally helped by Andrew along the way. Derek Rynenberg co principal of JDR Motorsports: “I have known Andrew personally and professionally since 2008 when he took the chance to join our up and coming team. Over the years Andrew has become a friend and mentor for all of us and was retiring at the end of this motocross season. With his valuable knowledge of MX/SX, and his dedication, commitment, professionalism, and his personal values he was about to embark on a management role within JDR. Andrew was the ultimate motocross champion, he was the ultimate professional in every facet of the sport, from his personal fitness and attitude to his bike set up which was second to none. Our hearts and thoughts go out to Nat and Tayla, Ron and Norma and the entire McFarlane family.’ Jay Rynenberg co principal and team manager of JDR Motorsports: ‘From a young age I have followed Andrew’s career and have looked up to him for many years. When Andrew came to us in 2008, it was a dream come true to work beside him. Andrew gave us the chance of a life time, he gave us all his knowledge, tools, time and everything we needed to follow our dream, a dream he shared. Without the faith that Andrew put into myself, and my family, we wouldn’t have been able to achieve the things we have achieved. That act of faith has changed my life forever. Over the years I began to know Andrew not only as a professional but also as a friend. He was such an inspiration off the track, he was so devoted to his wife Nat, his beautiful daughter Tayla, family and friends, that it was an honor to get to know him on the level that I did. Our team life, and personal life suffered the loss of a great friend, and a great champion. He will be missed forever. We would like to thank all the competitors, officials and spectators at the round for their support in honouring a true legend of the sport. The entire team of JDR Motorex KTM including: Jay Rynenberg, Derek Rynenberg, Trish Rynenberg, Tye Simmonds, Ryan Marmont, PJ Larsen, Danny Apro, Luke Sanderson, Craig Behl, Greg Simmonds, Keith Ward, Rick Osbaldiston, Tina Osbaldiston, Ash Simpson, Troy Newell, Peter Marmont, Sharon Marmont, Beau Ralston, Josh Cachia, Jeff Leisk, Rob Twyerould, Johnny Distefano, David Woodward, Lizzie Doyle, Greg Chambers and all the team sponsors, want to express their deepest sympathy to Nat, Tayla, Ron, Norma and all the McFarlane family, friends and supporters, and will carry Andrew in their hearts.
