LEGENDS OF RACING TO MEET AT PUKEKOHE
Andrew Stroud aboard a famous Manx

CAPTION: New Zealand former world champion Hugh Anderson, fromWaikato, excited about riding the famous Yamaha this weekend.

FEBRUARY 2, 2010: The impact of Yamaha on the motorcycle road-racing world of the 1960s and 1970s was tremendous and it is an integral part of those years that will be on display at the 31st Classic Motorcycle Festival at Pukekohe this weekend.

The famous 125cc 1968 RA31A Yamaha race bike from these "Golden Years"’ of road racing, along with one of New Zealand's own living treasures, Waikato's former world champion Hugh Anderson, will be out to relive the glory years on the Pukekohe tarseal.

A four-time former world champion, 74-year-old Anderson will ride the rare RA31A around Pukekohe as part of the weekend's festival.

The bike has been provided by Dutch enthusiast Ferry Brouwer. New Zealand bike legend Ken McIntosh, a name renowned in the classic bike circles, is directing the whole operation and the Dutch RA31A Team will work from McIntosh's workshop while in New Zealand.

This bike was the ‘blue-print’ of the fearsome Grand Prix 500s that ruled the GP scene until the arrival of the four-stroke era in 2002.

The water-cooled two-stroke engine revs to over 17,000 rpm and makes 42 brake horsepower. This equates to 336 bhp/litre at a time when Formula One car engines were happy to top 135 bhp/litre.  The nine-speed gearbox helped the rider keep the engine in its rather narrow power band.

The Yamaha V4 was so successful that Bill Ivy and Phil Read scored a first and second in the World 125 Championship of 1967 and reversed the result in 1968.  Between them they won nearly every GP event in both years.

In 1967 Bill Ivy set the first 100 mph lap of the Isle of Man by a 125, only 10
years after that speed had been set by a 500cc Gilera.  His lap record on the incredible Yamaha V4 stood for an astounding 21 years.

The festival has attracted over 250 riders from five countries, and will be running events for more than 350 bikes.

Anderson, who ended his road racing career in 1965, after winning the 125 world championship, has never ever seen a 125 four cylinder Yamaha before.
Riding it this weekend is something he is very excited about.

It will be the first time ever that a Yamaha factory machine from the golden era of the 1960s will set wheels on New Zealand's tarmac, something that is not likely to happen for at least another few years.

Questions/Answers with

Vito Ippolito, FIM President

Q. What conclusions can you draw after eight months of the 2009 season?

A. We were ready to go through 2009 with the world economic crisis in the background. During the last eight months we have been working in a close collaboration with all our promoters, manufacturers, sponsors, riders and all the participants in our sport as a whole. We are well aware of what is going on in each discipline in order to put in place some valid solutions which can ensure the permanence of the championships. We are also trying to establish the guidelines to follow for the next ten years. We still have a lot of work to do before the end of the season but globally participation in terms of spectators and media coverage is very satisfactory.

JIM TUCKERMAN NEW MNZ PRESIDENT

MAY 25, 2009: The governing body for motorcycle sport in this country -- Motorcycling New Zealand -- now has a new figurehead.

Auckland businessman Jim Tuckerman has been elected MNZ president for the next two years.

The announcement of the result of member voting came almost at the conclusion to two days of workshops and forums at the James Cook Hotel in a storm-lashed Wellington at the weekend.

Mr Tuckerman received 186 votes to edge out the incumbent, Mrs Sandra Perry, who received 129 votes.

Also elected were Marton's Carmen Davidson, to the role of North Island off-road representative, and Kevin Goddard, who was elected unopposed as the South Island road-race representative.

"I wish to offer thanks to those who supported me and also to thank Sandra (Perry) for all the work she's done for MNZ," said Mr Tuckerman.

"I have been encouraged, sitting in on the various workshops, that everyone is talking positively. Let's all get together now and work for the future."

A great deal of business was conducted over the two days with workshops for the various motorcycling codes producing some vibrant and fruitful discussion.

MNZ controls, manages and promotes motocross, road-racing, trials, cross-country racing, enduro, speedway, ATV, beach racing, supercross and trail riding activities in New Zealand and has a long and proud history of nurturing and building the foundation for the careers of many Kiwi internationals, some of whom have gone on to become world champions in their respective codes.

His exploits are perhaps only eclipsed by Ricky Carmichael, affectionally known as the G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Times). Roger is currently the team manager at American Suzuki and was instrumental in Ricky winning the 2005 and 2006 AMA Supercross and Motocross Championships. His own racing accomplishments are truly remarkable. Over the period 1972 to 1981 he won five 500cc Motocross World Championships, tallied a record 36 x 500cc Motocross Grand Prix victories, was a member of six winning Belgium Motocross des Nation teams, earned four Trans-AMA Motocross Championships, was a Gold Medallist in the International Six Day Trial (Enduro) and earned numerous national championships in his native Belgium. The weekend's activities include an informal get together on Friday night, the VMX meeting on Saturday, a special charity auction/social on Saturday night to raise funds for the Felton family from Auckland and then watching the modern boys (and girls) on Sunday. This opportunity has come about by the generous support and help from Steve Sweeney of Galvin Construction in Australia and Russell Burling from SsangYong here in New Zealand. A small group of enthusiasts have been working away behind the scenes to make sure it would happen. Roger's place in history was assured when he was inducted into the American Motorcycling Hall of Fame in 1999. He was also named to the Motorsports Hall of Fame in Novi, Michigan in 1994 becoming only the seventh motorcyclist and the first rider born outside the USA to be inducted.
